The Bitter Sweet Departure – Sweet Bit

In the midst of settling into postgrad uni life, moving from one place to another, getting my life together, God, family and running, I’ve been pressured by A FEW (you know who you are 😉 ) people (including my cousin!) to get this SWEET post out!

Basically, my SWEET post is about meeting up with all my loved ones! I managed to meet up/bump into most of them which brings peace and joy to my heart!

You know, life is short. Nobody knows what is going to happen next. You may never see someone again so even a short goodbye or a quick meet up is precious!

I’m just going to bombard this post with pictures! Because we’re all visually driven these days.

*Pictures are in no particular order in terms time/rank/priority :P*

She got the running mag! I know that I’ll always have full support from her. <3 Someone who keeps me grounded and reminds me that life does not have to be PERFECT and that I’ve got to learn to chill. You need someone like that in your life! Thanks for always having my back, always! And of course, I’ve got yours too. 😉

No matter where we’re at in life, we’re always there for each other… 100% of the time! I don’t know what I’d do without you in my life! 🙂 So blessed to have someone like you around. She’s got a BIG heart for people and I’m constantly inspired by that. And of course, her new crib is my new hang out spot. 😉

FullSizeRenderMy ex-colleagues (and my soul sister). All the best with work drama. ;P We had A LOT of good times! I trust my life and my secrets with this one. We’ve got a really good connection and we somehow just CLICK! We go WAY back and our friendship has gone through blizzards to get to where it is now. It is scary how well we both understand each other. This is solid stuff. Can’t wait for our next gossip session. IMG_2063Zukeri has taught me everything I need to know/do during surgery. Super talented and knowledgeable! All the best kawan! 🙂

IMG_5024Asian food with not so Asian friends. Thanks for the meal, Jeff! Glad to have met these 2 fine lads. They are first class when it comes to running and lame jokes. And they never let a moment slip by without teasing each other! There’s never a dull moment!

IMG_5079

IMG_5080Obviously I wasn’t paying attention.

IMG_5084They made me give an impromtu speech! I might have messed it up but all I want to say is that: THIS group was where it all started for me. I was just a lone runner who knew nothing about running. They brought me in, groomed and helped me bloom to who I am today.

From running competitively, seriously and a little harder, I’ve come to love the sport. Thank you for sharing and spreading the passion for a healthy competitive lifestyle. I could not have done it without the support, love and care from these guys! Cheers!

IMG_5060MONASH Med Bio MATES!

IMG_5058Uni life would have been SUCH A BORE without them. We ALWAYS have something or SOMEONE to talk about. 😉 It never ends. Thanks for all the AWESOME MEMORIES.

That’s it! These were some of the BEST last weeks in Malaysia. Of course, there were many others that were not documented. If you didn’t appear, that DOES NOT mean that you were not significant.

These are the people with SUBSTANCE. People who look beyond the superficial aspects of you. People you can spend a lifetime with talking about your deepest darkest fears or your wildest dreams without fear of being judged. People who will support you with prayer, love, compassion and who will shake you up if you go astray. People who truly want to see you grow and succeed in life.QUOTE

REAL PEOPLE

I hope you have these people. And when you do find them, keep them close. Cling onto them, let them know how much they mean to you and never let them go.

If you don’t, I hope you will come to find these people!

I am not an expressive person. And you might think that I don’t care. But I do. Trust me.

I DO!

XOXO

Kona Town, Hawaii – Last Day

Day 9 – 26th January 2016, Tuesday

Journey back to Kona Town

Wake up time: 7:30am

The entrance to our room.

It was another early start! I wanted to put in a run at Volvano park just before we left but when I woke up at 6am, it was below 10degrees and it was PITCH BLACK! No street lights, nothing! I didn’t bother moving from my comfy bed.

IMG_4014We packed up, checked out and had coffee and cup noodles before driving back to Kona Town.IMG_4018

Our first stop: Papakolea Green Sand Beach (one of the two green sand beaches in the US)

We heard a lot about the Green Sand Beach and apparently, it is one of the MUST-SEES in Hawai’i.

Green Sand Beach is not Green Sand Beach without GREEN SAND! Yes, the sand IS GREEN. It is green because of the glassy crystal Olivine. Olivine comes from olivine-rich lava that spewed out of cinder cones years ago.

Olivine is locally known as “Hawaiian Diamond” and it is denser than the other rocks/lava flows. The ocean current separates these heavier particles and concentrates them to form this beach!

IMG_4019

My first “outdoor” toilet experience. It was HORRIBLE! T_T

Like all things in life, good things don’t come easy! And that includes getting to this beach! It was quite remote and not easy to reach!

We drove to a harbor where they had parking lots.

2 ways to get to Green Sand Beach:

-Take a 4WD car

-HikeIMG_4759Loving the Garmin FR235! 😀

Distance to beach: 4.5km one way

We thought we’d hike/walk/jog there and take the 4WD back (to save time). On the way there, the guide in the 4WD told us that it was easier to take the 4WD THERE and HIKE back because heading there was mainly uphill! HE WAS RIGHT! It was not easy! IMG_4054The hike was hot with the sun blazing and shining directly in your face with no cover from trees/clouds. The terrain was also not easy to navigate with lots of rolling hills, sand, rocks and dried out grass. IMG_4024BUT, the view made it ALL worth it.IMG_4020 IMG_4050 IMG_4056 IMG_4059

IMG_4053I thought it was a really tough hike but my mom made it all the way! SO PROUD OF MY MOMMY BEAR!

IMG_4051 IMG_4052

Enjoying the view!

You can see the GREEN sand.IMG_4069I climbed down the lava cliff to get to the bay. I made a mistake of NOT wearing my shoes! IT WAS BURNING HOT! I had to rush to the sea to cool off!

IMG_4070 IMG_4077It was a steep hike down!

IMG_4078 IMG_4071 IMG_4072 IMG_4074 IMG_4079 Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset IMG_4080After enjoying the beach and the view, we took the 4WD back which cost $15 each! It was worth it because by then, the heat had gotten to us. We were exhausted and hungry.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetGarmin Panda says it is Kona Coffee Latte O’clock!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWe settled for a cafe along the way to Kona Town. I cannot remember the name of this place but they had decent food!

We were so tired, we drove straight to our AirBnb accommodation in Kona town. IMG_4128Kona town Oasis!

IMG_4127It was a really nice place that was super central! It was just 300m walk to Ali’i Drive (tourist area). It was also just 10mins away from the airport, shopping malls, food etc. The couple who runs this place actually started it to accommodate athletes that were competing in the Kona Ironman!

IMG_4126 IMG_4141

Perfect day out!

After resting for a bit, I went for a run! It was one of the best running experiences along the Kona Ironman route! I didn’t know that that was THE Ironman route! Our Airbnb host, Marc, said that you can see 100s of swimmers training every morning! I ran to the pier to check out the place where they do their bike transitions. It is a big event and there were many permanent signs everywhere.

It was a pleasant run along the killer tough route! It was hilly and windy. I ran right along the coast and occasionally, sea water would splash and burn your eyes and skin. Too salty! There were SO many people out there training, running, swimming, biking, surfing etc. I followed a guy who was doing his brick training! It was fun to pace with someone else. Great way to connect with people too! I loved every bit of running in this town. Kinda miss it now.

Day 10 – 27th January 2016, Wednesday

We didn’t do much at night, mainly packing. Our flight was at 7:50am the next day and we had to be up by 4am! IMG_4172The al fresco style airport at Big Island! Yes, that’s the waiting area.

IMG_4186Coffee and breakfast at Honolulu airport.

IMG_4177Mahalo Hawai’i!

I am very grateful to be able to visit such a beautiful place! This trip was fun (SO FREAKIN AWESOME OMG!) and it also made me appreciate the beauty of nature (even more!) and the wonderful hands of our CREATOR.

Just. Too. PERFECT.

W.O.W!

Hilo, Hawaii – Day 6 and Day 7

Day 6 – 23rd January, Saturday

Checking out of Mauna Lani Bay

Packed and bid goodbye to the 5-star luxury life.

Next stop: Road trip around Big Island!IMG_3289First stop: Renting a car!

Everything went smoothly and we were on our way to Hilo at 11:15am. There were 2 ways to Hilo town – through Wimea or the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWe decided to take the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (because it was shorter in terms of distance), through Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.

IMG_3297The drive was also quite scenic as the highway is in between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (there is a viewing point where you can see yourself in between!). These are 2 of the 5 volcanoes that make up the island of Hawai’i.

IMG_3303

*Did you know: Hawaii is pronounced and written as Hawai’i*

IMG_3304

As we could not check-in to our hotel yet, we drove straight to Rainbow Falls.

Day 7 – 24th January, Sunday

I woke up before the sun was up to put in a semi-long run along the Hamakua coast. Will blog about it in detail in another post!

I was feeling very sleep deprived before my run but I knew that I would feel so much better after! And I did!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetRoad trippin’, Maui style (although we were on Big Island)!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

First stop: Akaka Falls

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Akaka Falls was named after chief ‘Akaka-o-ka-ni’au-pi’o-i-ka-wao. There are many ancient stories (like all the other places) associated with this waterfall.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

It was a 700m loop trail to see Kahuna Falls and Akaka Falls.IMG_4407

Recorded it with the FR 235. 😀 You can see the waterfall!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetAkaka Falls is the highest free-falling waterfall in Hawai’i. Kolekole stream drops 442ft from the gulch.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Kahuna Falls is a cascading waterfall and plunges 300ft into Kolekole stream. Kolekole stream cuts a deep and narrow gorge into the ash and basalt of Mauna Kea.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetAfter Akaka Falls, we drove 45mins up North to Waipi’o Valley – the valley of the Kings. It is actually privately owned and they plant a lot of taro, rice and sugar!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

IMG_3502 We might have joked about it.

We were not allowed into the valley due to a dengue outbreak! The valley was huge but we could only see part of it. You can Google to see the full valley. Pretty spectacular!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetOn the way back, we stopped at Honokaa for coffee and ice cream. It was a Sunday, so majority of the shops were closed!

IMG_3548Spotted a painted church on the way back!

IMG_3550Just a quaint little Catholic church with colourful murals and stained glass windows.

We drove straight back to our hotel – Hilo Reeds Bay. We pumped petrol and bought some snacks along the way. We still had daylight and time to kill so we took a drive ALL THE WAY down South (highway 130) to check out the black sand beach.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWell, it WAS black but definitely not a sand beach anymore. It was just hardened lava forming a cliff. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe island’s landscape is ever changing.

IMG_3557We were told that we could see the lava flow through the highway but it no longer exists (it was just months ago).

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThere was nothing much to see there. If you ever come to Big Island, you can give this one a miss.

It was around 5-ish. On the way back, we stopped at Walmart to pick up some food and drinks for our journey to the Volcano Park the next day.

We were cracking our heads on what to eat for dinner and then we came across Ken’s House of Pancakes that was opened 24 hours!

IMG_3564The place was packed! It was a typical American Diner with HUGE hamburgers, sandwiches and PANCAKES! There was something called the Sumo and trust me, the pancakes were bigger than my face.

That’s the end of Day 6 and 7.

Next up, VOLCANO PARK! The highlight of my trip!

Stay tuned!

xoxo

Kona, Hawaii – Day 1 & Day 2

Day 1 – 18th January, Monday

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia –> Narita, Tokyo –> Honolulu, Hawaii –> Kona, Hawaii

Total time (door to door): 24 hours

Total time spent flying: 14 hours

Compared to my other trips to the USA, this was the most bearable one! Despite having ZERO sleep on Sunday night, I was surprisingly okay!

The journey started at 4:15am (when we left for KL Sentral), Monday morning. As the last minute hero, I was up all night packing till 1:30am. On top of that, I had some work to finish before leaving the house which explained why I had no sleep. Also, I was out the WHOLE day.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetGetting ready for the LONG journey!

Took a nap on the train to KLIA. We checked in and headed to Starbucks for coffee!

Narita, Tokyo

The flight was good and the service was superb. Managed to catch some sleep and watch 1 movie!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWe had breakfast in the plane at around 10am (KL time).

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe layover was about 3 hours. We decided to have our late lunch at around 4-5pm (KL time). I was FAMISHED! I was glad that this meal didn’t disappoint! It was the ONLY place that had decent food. Very fresh but also very expensive.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetWho wants to guess the cost of this meal?

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetSo FRESH!

Honolulu, Hawaii

The flight was delayed for about 1 hour, not sure why. The ride was also not as pleasant and it was quite turbulent. But it was all good, quite exciting actually. Managed a little more sleep on this flight. I had so many mini naps in between that I dragged one movie for the entire duration of the journey. Haaaaaa! Didn’t even manage to watch the ending when the plane landed!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetAfter going through customs/transit etc, we had breakfast at an All-American diner. Although it was not eating time back home (12am KL time), I was feeling hungry! Okay lah, when am I not hungry? 😛

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe face of the exhausted.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetAnd then had coffee at Starbucks while waiting to board the plane to Kona on BIG Island!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset Using my new passport wallet from my special friend. 😉 LOVE it!

Kona, Hawaii

The airport was barely an airport! More like an al-fresco style waiting area. IMG_2359See that “B” sign? That’s the baggage claim area!

When we arrived, our taxi was waiting for us (DDI, my mom’s company). Jim, our driver, drove us straight to Mauna Lani Bay Resort.

IMG_2363Thankfully, our room was ready. It was about 10am and check-in is usually at 3pm. So, we were very fortunate!

IMG_2372A guy at the airport jokingly asked if I was sponsored by Puma. Haaaaa! Was it THAT obvious? 😉 Technically, not anymore.

I couldn’t wait to put my head under nice warm running water. After a hot bath, I was feeling so smashed and so relaxed at the same time. Had a good 1 hour nap before heading out for lunch.

We took a walk to The Shops, a commercial area with food and some shopping. It was about 1 km from our hotel.

IMG_2395The Shops.

After looking through the food list, I convinced my mom to have lunch at “Under the Bodhi Tree”. You guess it! It is a healthy, vegan and raw food place. My mom nearly flipped when she learned that there was no MEAT!

IMG_2397We had fungus hummungus (Quinoa with loads of mushrooms) and a veggie burger to share.

After lunch, we went to the grocery store (which was VERY well stocked) to get some stuff. As we were stuffed from lunch, we decided to walk back to the hotel (free shuttle service available all day around Mauna Lani).

IMG_2402Free bike rentals!

IMG_2403Took one out for a quick spin.

IMG_2415We took a short walk on the beach before returning to our rooms.

IMG_2431 IMG_2432 IMG_2433For dinner, we took the shuttle to The Shops (again!). We didn’t want to venture out from Mauna Lani. The next town was quite a distance away.  We settled for Tommy Bahamas. Fresh seafood and produce, everything was made from scratch!

Thanks to NO SLEEP SUNDAY, I was able to sleep like a pig the minute my head hit the pillow.

 Day 2 – 19th January, Tuesday

IMG_2437

My mom and I lazed around in bed till about 9:30am.

IMG_2438The day started with buffet breakfast at the hotel.

IMG_2440OOZING yolk! I love doing that – poking it and watching it flow!

IMG_2444Made my own bagel and lox. 😀

IMG_2450I have a soft spot for cream cheese. Just had to have it with everything! This was all eaten in one seating. 😀 Safe to say that I started the day right – with a HUGE breakfast.

The Holiday Season: 3 Things to Do

1. Be Grateful

Whatever situation you’re in, however crappy your life is right now, BE GRATEFUL. You’re still alive, you’re still breathing, that heart of yours is beating every millisecond.

My younger self always craved for more. More money, more stuff (more like junk), more clothes, more food, more pleasure, more more MORE…… I guess that’s human nature. We are never satisfied with what we have.

IMG_6350

I am not saying that we should not have goals in life or that we should settle for what we have. But while we are chasing those goals/dreams/the ‘more” in life, appreciate and be thankful for what you NOW have. Someone else out there is dying to have what you have, someone else out there is fighting for their life.

If you have more, give back. Always give within your means. Whether it is 10 ringgit or 1000 ringgit, a gift is a gift. There is no gift that is too small or too insignificant. And no one should judge you for it. It may not even be monetary. It may be as simple as a helping hand, a listening ear or a warm hug. What matters is that it is a gift from the HEART.

FullSizeRender_3

This is also a reminder to myself. I tend to “forget” what God has blessed me with and what He has done to wipe out my sins. Taking this time to STOP, DROP and just be GRATEFUL.

2. Eat to Your Heart’s Content

The holiday season means LOADS of parties and FOOD. I’ve had a few people asking me how to curb cravings during this season. Well, my answer is just enjoy yourself.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetCalories do not count during this season. HAHA! Have a bit of everything but that does not mean that you should stuff yourself silly or feel sick after.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetFamily gatherings are always centered around food. Instead of worrying about what you’re eating, focus on having a good time with the people you love. Enjoy the time with your family/friends, eat whatever you want AND JUST HAVE A GOOD TIME!FullSizeRender_2

If you want that slice of cake/cookie/pie, JUST EAT IT! You should be more concerned about what you eat on a daily basis and NOT just during the holiday season.

3. Sneak in a Workout

I know, everyone is busy preparing for the holiday season. Working out is usually the first to be cut out from the list of things to do. But don’t! In the midst of the hustle and bustle, take some time out for yourself. Get in a good workout or just MOVE. You may have decided to take a break from your usual routine (which is okay!) but that does not mean that you do ABSOLUTELY nothing. You might want to turn down the intensity or duration but don’t completely remove it.

Opt for something light and easy and something that is also enjoyable. You can go for a family walk/jog, play some outdoor games, try a new sport/class, walk your dog etc.FullSizeRender

JUST GET MOVING. You may feel sluggish and tired from all the food at first, but I promise you once you get going, you’ll be fine. PLUS, you’ll feel super and more energized right after!
